Date and  venue

 

The First Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention will be held at   Conrad Hotel in Punta del Este, Uruguay, from 2-6 May, 2005.  Registration will open at the meeting venue from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, 1 May 2005 and throughout the week according to a schedule that will be made available.

A VISA IS REQUIRED TO ENTER URUGUAY FROM OTHER COUNTRIES NOT INCLUDED IN THE ABOVE LIST

 

However, visas will be issued free-of-charge to participants at their arrival, at  Carrasco International Airport (Montevideo) or at Laguna del Sauce Airport (Punta del Este).  Please contact the Secretariat at ssc@chemicals.unep.ch if you have any questions.

 

Participants whose flights make a stopover in the United States will need an American visa. If you do not have a visa yet, please contact your closest American Consulate. 

 

Vaccines

 

Due to health conditions in Uruguay, no particular vaccines are required.        

                                                

Cell Phones

In the hall of the Convention Center will be installed a stand to rent cell phones. 

Cell phones will be available at U$S 90. This includes a new GSM phone with U$S 30 for calls.

A card may be bought for additional minutes.

Once the Conference is over, participants may return their phones and they will be reimbursed U$S 60.

Uruguayan or American currency will be accepted as well as VISA and MASTERCARD.

 

Currency and exchange rate

 

The Uruguayan currency is the peso. One U.S. dollar is equivalent to 30 pesos.  

 

Participants may pay for their expenses in U.S. dollars (accommodation, restaurants, shops etc.). However, transportation must be paid in pesos. 

 

Flights

 

The following airlines operate in Uruguay: Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aero Vip, American Airlines, Iberia, Lan Chile, PLUNA-VARIG, TAM, United Airlines and U Air.   Participant may arrive at either the Montevideo (less than 2 hours from Punta del Este by bus) or Punta del Este airports.

 

Transportation

 

Transportation between the Punta del Este airport, the main hotels and the Meeting venue will be made available for all participants by the Government of Uruguay.   Transportation is also available from the Montevideo airport to meeting venue and other points in Punta del Este.

 

Transfers

 

It is important to book transfers in advance. Carrasco International Airport (Montevideo/MVD) is located 120 km from Punta del Este and Punta del Este Airport (PDE) it located 18 km from the Peninsula.

Languages

 

The official language of Uruguay is Spanish.

During the Meeting, UNEP shall provide simultaneous interpretation from and into the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

 

Time

 

12.00 noon GMT corresponds to 9.00 a.m. in Punta del Este.    

                                                

Voltage

 

The voltage in Uruguay is 220 volts.

 

Medical coverage

 

The Government of Uruguay shall provide first aid emergency facilities in the Meeting area. In case of serious emergency, the Government of Uruguay shall ensure immediate transportation and admission to hospital.                             

 

Other services

 

The following services will be available at the Meeting venue: travel agency, post office, foreign exchange, call center, tourist information, internet café, snack bar.

 

Press

 

The media shall have access to the Meeting. There will be an area available to the press in the Meeting area.
